Environment

Environmental permits for the Port of Helsinki operations stipulate environmental protection requirements for both passenger and cargo traffic. Environmental surveys are based on the investigative and monitoring obligations specified in environmental permits.

Environmental management is based on ISO 14001 requirements. Environmental matters are incorporated in the Integrated Management System of the Port of Helsinki. The annual environmental program takes into account the objectives of the sustainable development action plans of both the Port of Helsinki and the City of Helsinki.

Environmental effects

Port operations always have effects on the environment. While the Port of Helsinki’s own operations have impact as well, larger-scale environmental effects are caused by vessel traffic and the related ground transport. The Port of Helsinki aims to keep its own environmental effects in check while also supporting the environmental activities of all parties operating at the port. The environmental effects monitored by the Port of Helsinki are specified on the website.
