VTS - Vessel Traffic Service
VTS is a service which aims to safeguard water traffic and improve its smooth operations, prevent accidents and foresee their possible environmental damages. A real-time picture of traffic is updated by radar and AIS- information, cameras and VHF-radio announcements. Ships receive information on traffic, the condition of fairways and protective device and their usability as well as on other matters effecting safe traffic.
Participation in Vessel Traffic Service
Vessels of 24 metres or more in overall length are obligated to participate in the vessel traffic service by reporting to the VTS authority, by listening to VHF channel 71 in the VTS area and by observing the provisions concerning traffic in the VTS area.
