Environmental monitoring

The environmental permits granted for the operations of the Port of Helsinki determine the requirements for environmental protection, both for passenger and freight traffic. The environmental permits oblige to measure and monitor the state of the environment in the harbour areas.

The effects of the construction of Vuosaari Harbour on bird life, flora, water systems and fish have been monitored, the water areas and fishing industry have been monitored in the Taulukari and Mustakupu dumping areas, and the effects of dredging on water systems have been monitored in Jätkäsaari. The effects of the South and West Harbour port operations on the water systems are monitored in the framework of co-operative monitoring. Air quality is monitored as part of HSY’s air quality monitoring in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The measuring and monitoring have been carried out to the extent required by the supervisory authorities.
