Another record result for the cruise season

Helsinki has been growing in popularity as an international cruise destination year after year. 303 cruise ships docked at Helsinki ports during the 2019 cruise season, which is six per cent more than last year. This is the first time the 300 mark has been broken.

The number of cruise passengers also grew. There were 603,500 cruise passengers this year – just under 50,000 more than in 2018. The majority of cruise passengers came from Germany, the USA and the UK. Hernesaari’s new LHD quay for large cruise ships was particularly popular.

“More than 574,000 passengers passed through Hernesaari in summer 2019, making it the clear focus for cruise traffic,” says the Port of Helsinki’s Harbour Master Antti Pulkkinen.

Professionals have praised Hernesaari for its wastewater reception and well-functioning quays.

Cruise ships also dock in Katajanokka and the South Harbour, which have the advantage of being very close to the city centre. However, considerably fewer cruise ships use these ports.

Pulkkinen is satisfied with the results for the season, and also with the favourable weather during the late season.

“On average, three to five dockings per year are cancelled due to weather in the September–October period, but this year’s favourable weather meant there wasn’t a single cancellation,” says Pulkkinen.
