A report on the future of city-centre ports
After plans for the central tunnel were shelved, Helsinki Mayor Jan Vapaavuori commissioned an analysis of future solutions for the Port of Helsinki’s operations in the city centre.
“Work is already ongoing. In December, we’ll be able to announce what issues are being taken into consideration. The final report will be ready by the end of June 2020,” says the Port of Helsinki’s Jukka Kallio, Vice President, Cargo.
At the moment, transferring passenger traffic to Vuosaari seems unrealistic. The current volume of passenger traffic in Vuosaari (in practice Finnlines’ Star vessels, Eckerö Line’s M/S Finbo Cargo and Tallink’s Sea Wind) is very low in relation to passenger numbers in Jätkäsaari.
“Passenger traffic in Vuosaari currently stands at around 200,000 passengers, while nine million passengers travel on Tallinn-bound routes every year.”
