Lower-emission waste management

A new service provider, Urbaser Oy, has been responsible for the management of solid waste at the Port of Helsinki since the beginning of October.

The port’s carbon neutral programme is also steering its selection of service providers.

“This is the first time that low-emission equipment was included in the quality criteria for waste management tendering,” says Jukka Haarni, cruise and service development manager at the port.

“We were pleasantly surprised to find that five out of the six service providers received full marks for environmental friendliness. I doubt this would have been the case a few years ago.”

For customers, the change in service provider will mainly be visible as a different logo on the side of waste containers and visits from Urbaser’s low-emission collection vehicles.
