The demolition of the Makasiini Terminal is underway on Makasiiniranta and is scheduled for completion in early July.

As part of the Port of Helsinki’s development programme, passenger traffic will be transferred to Katajanokka and the West Harbour. The demolition of the Makasiini Terminal is the first step in the programme. The City is planning new construction to replace the terminal, such as an architecture and design museum, a seafront boulevard and services.

The demolition is being carried out by Lotus Demolition, one of the largest demolition companies in Finland. All demolition waste will be sorted and recycled whenever possible. Steel and other metal waste will be reused, and any concrete structures that are free of hazardous substances will be processed into material for earthworks.

The half-hectare Makasiini Terminal was originally opened in 1960 as a harbour warehouse. Since the 1990s, it has served as a passenger terminal for express ferries to Tallinn.
