Drones have an increasing role in the port
Engineering student Tuomo Seppälä conducted a study for the Port of Helsinki on the benefits of using drones in port environments. Drones already play an important role in the digitalisation of port operations, and this will only increase.
- Drones can be used to produce a broad range of imagery to support the port’s digital future.
- Drones can aid surveillance in the port area. They can be used both as flying surveillance cameras and for technical surveillance. Artificial intelligence coupled with a thermal camera can be used both for visual surveillance and to monitor thermally controlled containers.
- Drones are well suited to inspect the condition of port infrastructure. For example, checking the condition of quays used to require the efforts of several people and a boat. Yet now, one person can check the quays in a couple of hours with the aid of a drone.
