The Vuosaari road tunnel will close to traffic January 6, 2026 due to renovation work. The closure is expected to last about a year. During this period, traffic will follow a detour from Ring III to Vuosaari Harbour via Itäväylä, Kallvikintie and Niinisaarentie. This detour will extend the distance from Ring III to the harbour from three to about five kilometres.

The detour was tested in early October. During the tunnel renovation, estimated driving times from Ring III to Vuosaari Harbour will increase by 3–4 minutes due to the alternative route, and during peak hours, it’s advisable to expect occasional delays depending on the time of day and direction of travel.

Several road improvements were made along the detour during 2025 to improve traffic flow. For example, additional lanes have been built at the intersection of Itäväylä and Kallvikintie and at the roundabout between Niinisaarentie and Kallvikintie. Traffic flow has also been facilitated by, for example, altering lane arrangements on Itäväylä when turning onto Kallvikintie, adjusting traffic lights during rush hours, and removing the bus stop near the Itäväylä/Kallvikintie roundabout. The detour will be maintained to the highest possible standard during the winter months.

Vuosaari Tunnel is scheduled to close in January, so that it can remain open to cargo traffic during the busy Christmas season.

Now that Vuosaari Tunnel has been serving traffic for almost 20 years, its technology has reached the end of its lifecycle and must be upgraded.
