Katajanokka terminal design underway
Design work for the renovation and refurbishment of the historic Katajanokka Terminal is now underway.
The principal designer is Helin & Co Architects, an office that was established in 1999 and is known for its sustainable and inspiring architecture. Sweco, a specialist design and consultancy firm, is also involved in the design process.
“From the outset, one of the important cornerstones of the expansion project has been to design the terminal to serve not only passenger traffic, but also Katajanokka residents and Helsinki citizens – to create positive, functional synergy in facilities and services,” says Pekka Helin, founder and chair of Helin & Co Architects.
“The temporal rhythm of port activities provides an excellent opportunity for shared use.”
The current passenger pavilion is an example of Gunnar Taucher’s high-quality brick architecture of the late 1930s, and its original facades are protected.
“The extension will respect this, but will also constitute a contemporary addition to the district’s distinctive architecture.”
Actual construction work is expected to begin in 2028. Extensive changes at the Port of Helsinki will transfer Tallinn traffic to the West Harbour, while Stockholm-bound vessels operated by Viking Line and Tallink Silja Line will be concentrated on Katajanokka.
