Local detailed planning of Katajanokka Harbour begins

Work has begun on the local detailed plan for the development of the Katajanokka Harbour area. The planning aims to facilitate the development of the area so that all traffic to and from Stockholm could operate out of Katajanokka in the future.
The plan amendment for Katajanokka Harbour is part of the development of Helsinki’s ports, where passenger traffic will be concentrated in Katajanokka and the West Harbour. Only international cruise ships would remain in the South Harbour, freeing up a large part of the area for city residents to use for purposes such as museums.
The plan is to renovate and expand the historic Katajanokka Terminal in the coming years, with the aim of having the terminal accommodate two shipping companies.
“Katajanokka Terminal is an important part of the city’s maritime identity and a gateway to Stockholm for millions of passengers every year. The planning process is an important step towards a future where we can concentrate the Stockholm traffic in Katajanokka and offer passengers more efficient services,” says Kaj Takolander, VP of Passenger Services at the Port of Helsinki.
The participation and assessment plan and other planning materials prepared by the City of Helsinki will be on public display until 25 June 2026. The materials are available on the City of Helsinki website.
A public event on the development of the area will be held on Wednesday 17 June 2026 at 16.30–18.00 at the City Hall Event Square. At the event, you can meet representatives of the Port of Helsinki, the City of Helsinki, and the designers of the Allas Pool project.
The Port of Helsinki is participating in the planning in cooperation with the City of Helsinki. The plan proposals will be made available for feedback at a later stage. The goal is that the reviewed plan proposals will be submitted to the Urban Environment Committee at the end of 2027.
You can find more information on the planning and view the materials on the City of Helsinki website.
