Port of Helsinki
We are one of Europe’s busiest international passenger ports and Finland’s leading general port for foreign trade. We create a seamless framework for sea travel to Tallinn, Stockholm and Travemünde. In 2025, 9.6 million passengers and 13.4 million tonnes of freight passed through us.
Our mission is to create safe and efficient conditions for passenger and freight transport. We are responsible for port infrastructure, passenger terminals and the development and maintenance of port areas. Other operators in the port include shipping companies, terminal operators, logistics companies, public authorities and other service providers.
Port of Helsinki Ltd is a limited company owned by the City of Helsinki. Our subsidiaries are Port of Loviisa Ltd and South Finland Port Service Ltd. In 2025, the Group’s turnover was EUR 102.6 million.
Among our strengths are frequent liner traffic, efficient infrastructure, good road and rail connections and excellent services provided in cooperation with our partners.
We keep Finland going
We play a major role in the smooth functioning of Finland’s foreign trade logistics and in ensuring Finland’s security of supply.
According to a study by the University of Helsinki, the Port of Helsinki is a significant driver of the economy and employment: the total annual economic impact of port operations is EUR 4.2 billion, with a total employment impact of over 39,000 jobs.
The value of goods transported via the Port of Helsinki accounts for around 1/3 of the total value of maritime transport in Finland, and passengers arriving in Helsinki via the port generate a significant cash flow. Exports particularly consist of forest industry products, as well as machinery and equipment. Helsinki’s harbours
The various harbours of the Port of Helsinki cater for passenger, freight and cruise traffic. Each harbour has its own primary function, but passenger and freight traffic often run side by side in practice. For example, passenger ferries also carry cargo in addition to passengers.
- South Harbour
- There is a daily ferry from South Harbour to Stockholm. Additionally, several international cruise ships call at South Harbour every year.
- Katajanokka Harbour
- Ferries depart daily from Katajanokka to Tallinn and Stockholm.
- West Harbour
- West Harbour has frequent daily services to Tallinn.
- Vuosaari Harbour
- Vuosaari Harbour is a cargo harbour that mainly handles freight, but it also serves as a departure point for passenger ships bound for Muuga and Travemünde.

In the port ecosystem, everyone has their own role to play
Port of Helsinki Ltd is responsible for the basic infrastructure of Helsinki’s port areas, such as traffic arrangements, gates, telecommunications, quays, its own buildings and passenger bridges, for example. We ensure that the whole system runs smoothly and also provide services such as car parking for passengers. We also play our part in ensuring the safety of our shared workplace.
In addition to the port company, those responsible for port operations include port operators, shipping companies, transport companies, ship service providers, freight forwarders and agents, among others. The authorities also play an important role, with the Border Guard and Customs present at the harbours.
Port staff
The Port of Helsinki’s approximately 110 employees include experts in areas such as technical development, business operations, security, property management, finance, information systems, communications and human resources. Our work creates the conditions that enable the companies operating at the port and their thousands of employees to carry out their work safely and smoothly every day.
Our work is carried out across six departments, whose areas of expertise cover the port’s business operations, infrastructure development, finance, human resources, communications and information management. The Chief Executive Officer, together with the Management Team, is responsible for the organisation as a whole.
