The Port of Helsinki is an integral part of Helsinki. Our harbours are situated right in the heart of the city and its everyday life, so we want to be a good neighbour to local residents, businesses and our partners alike.

For us, social responsibility means a safe working environment, open dialogue with the surrounding community and contributing to the wellbeing of our local area. We want to play our part in making Helsinki and the whole of Finland an even better place to live, work and travel.

Together with local communities

Our harbours and their neighbourhoods live side by side every day. That is why we consider it important to engage in open cooperation with the residents, neighbourhood associations, businesses and other stakeholders in the areas surrounding our harbours. We listen to feedback, communicate openly about our activities and develop the Port in collaboration with our stakeholders.

Every year, we help to organise events that bring the Port and city residents together. These include events such as Vuosaari Harbour Day (external link), the Baltic Sea Festival (external link) and Hyvän Tuulen Fest.

The Port encourages its staff to do voluntary work

Every employee of the Port of Helsinki is entitled to take one working day a year to do voluntary work. Our staff participate in activities such as working in service homes for older people, organisations supporting families with children, initiatives promoting animal welfare and clean-up campaigns organised to protect the Baltic Sea and local nature.

Volunteering is one way of taking responsibility for the community around us and supporting organisations that do important work.

We support the Baltic Sea and local communities

Through sponsorship, we support activities that strengthen a sense of community in the areas surrounding our harbours or promote the wellbeing of the marine environment. We support local events, associations, youth sports teams and organisations working to protect the Baltic Sea, amongst others.

Our long-standing partners include the John Nurminen Foundation and SOS Children’s Village’s ‘Grandma and Grandpa’s House’ in Vuosaari.

A safe working environment

Safety is the cornerstone of the Port of Helsinki’s operations. We want our own staff and everyone else working in the port area to be able to carry out their work safely every day.

Our occupational health and safety management system is certified in accordance with the ISO 45001 standard. We are constantly developing our safety culture, and our aim is to achieve zero workplace accidents.
