Port of Helsinki and Tapio Lehtinen to cooperate

Sailor Tapio Lehtinen and Kaj Takolander, Port of Helsinki’s VP Passenger Services

The Port of Helsinki and Tapio Lehtinen Sailing Oy have made a cooperation agreement concerning Tapio Lehtinen’s circumnavigations of the world in 2022–2024. Tapio Lehtinen and the Port of Helsinki share their commitment to resolving the climate crisis and, in particular, to environmental work for the benefit of the seas, and wish to involve other actors and raise awareness of the measures taken and the solutions available to the general public.

“This is an excellent opportunity for us not only to participate in the exciting Golden Globe Race and Ocean Globe Race contests around the world, but also to promote our environmental work through this cooperation,” says Kaj Takolander, Port of Helsinki’s VP Passenger Services.

In addition to environmental issues, Tapio Lehtinen also wants to invest in young people and maintain renowned Finnish seamanship, which is needed for ocean voyages and which was already internationally recognised in the era of sailing ships. The Port of Helsinki will gain exposure as the home port printed on the stern of the S/Y Asteria during the Golden Globe race starting in September and the stern of the S/Y Galiana a year later in the Ocean Globe Race.

“We are proud to announce that the Port of Helsinki is our home port. Helsinki, surrounded by the sea and an archipelago on three sides, is the best possible home for a sailor. This cooperation is natural for both of us, as if the missing piece of the puzzle had been found. The world’s happiest country’s economic wellbeing is based on shipping, and the Port of Helsinki is our gateway to the world. Our partnership with the Port of Helsinki strengthens our link to commercial shipping and the chain of operators in the sector,” Tapio Lehtinen says.

The cooperation was announced  in connection with the 70th anniversary of the Olympia Terminal.
