Developing West Harbour
Helsinki is experiencing construction at a greater rate than ever before, and construction at Helsinki’s new maritime district, Jätkäsaari, is progressing at full speed. The shore area of Jätkäsaari, literally meaning ‘Dockers’ Island’, previously used for industrial and harbour purposes, is gradually being transformed into a district offering residential areas, workplaces and services.

Constructing new offices at West Terminal 2
- West Terminal 2 will receive a total of roughly 240 square metres of new office premises as supplemental construction.
- Ongoing
- Estimated completion in June 2024
Recently completed
Gate system for heavy traffic check-in
- A smart port system was implemented for heavy traffic at the West Harbour. It includes a preliminary identification point, a post identification point and a lane management system as well as their appliances and software. The data system interfaces of the Port and shipping company are integrated.
- This project was part of the streamlining of the sea traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn as well as the development of the Europe-wide Ten-T network. The project has received support from the EU investment project Twin-Port4.
- Completed 9/2023
Onshore Power for berths LJ7 and LJ8
- The Port of Helsinki is building new onshore power connections at berths LJ7 and JL8.
- This project is connected to the implementation of the Port’s carbon neutral programme. Onshore power supply makes it possible to reduce the climate emissions generated while ships are berthed in port.
- This project is part of the streamlining of the sea traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn as well as the development of the Europe-wide Ten-T network. The construction was partly funded by the EU investment project TWIN-PORT III
- Completed in April 2023
Moving the preliminary identification point for passenger vehicles
- The preliminary identification point of the smart port gate system is moved to another location inside the harbour area.
- This project is part of the streamlining of the sea traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn as well as the development of the Europe-wide Ten-T network. The project has received support from the EU investment project TWIN-PORT IV.

Gate system for passenger vehicle check-in
- A smart port system was implemented for passenger cars at the West Harbour to automate the guidance of vehicles boarding ships. The data system interfaces of the Port and shipping company were integrated. The operations are supported by a new preliminary identification point that identifies vehicles and measures them with scanners. Based on the preliminary identification data, the vehicle is guided on a vehicle-specific basis to the desired check-in lane and onwards to the desired boarding lane.
- This project is part of the streamlining of the sea traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn as well as the development of the Europe-wide Ten-T network. The project has received support from the EU investment project TWIN-PORT IV.
- Completed in March 2021
Automooring for berth LJ8
- The Port of Helsinki will implement a second automatic mooring system for berth LJ8 of West Terminal 2 at the West Harbour.
- The project is part of the streamlining of the sea traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn as well as the development of the Europe-wide Ten-T network. The project has received support from the EU investment project TWIN-PORT III.
- Completed May /2021
Solar power plant
- A new solar power plant was installed on the roof of West Terminal 2. The use of renewable solar energy reduces the Port’s carbon footprint directly by reducing the consumption of energy generated with fossil fuels.
- This project is connected to the implementation of the Port’s carbon neutral programme.
- Completed in November 2020
