Q3 at the Port of Helsinki: Unitised cargo on the up

In late September, the volume of traffic through the Port of Helsinki was larger compared to the previous year both in terms of cargo and number of passengers. Goods were transported in particular by trucks, lorries and trailers. The volume of passenger traffic remained high even after the busy summer season.

From January to September, cargo traffic through the Port of Helsinki amounted to a total of 10.6 million tonnes, increasing by 2.1% from the corresponding period in the previous year. Of the total amount of cargo traffic, 4.8 million tonnes was in import (+3.2%), and 5.6 million tonnes in export (+3.2%).

The Port of Helsinki is specialised in unitised cargo traffic, i.e. goods travel through the port in sea containers, trucks and trailers, in particular. A total of 9.3 million tonnes of unitised cargo were transported (+6.7%) through the port. Container traffic was 0.7% above the previous year measured in tonnes, but rubber-wheeled traffic* in particular was strong: it increased by 9.2% compared to the corresponding period the previous year. 

Travel busiest between Helsinki and Tallinn

In Helsinki’s scheduled passenger traffic, there were 7.2 million passengers from January to September, which is 4.3% more than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The number of passengers recorded on the route between Helsinki and Tallinn was 5.8 million (+4.4%).
The number of passengers between Stockholm and Helsinki was 1.3 million (+3.7%), and the same number was 0.1 million (+1.1%) between Travemünde and Helsinki.

International cruise traffic brought 125,724 (-22.8%) visitors to Helsinki. The season continues until late October.
