Vehicles are measured, weighed, and photographed at the main gate of Vuosaari Harbour

The recently introduced gate system at gate A of Vuosaari Harbour identifies, weighs, measures, and records the condition of heavy vehicles as they enter the area. The recognition and some of the measurements were previously carried out at the operators’ gates, but the new system at gate A now provides operators and shipping companies with entirely new data.
The information collected at the main gate is more extensive than before, and as such, opens the door for new opportunities for making the harbour operations more effective.
“Centralising the operations at the main gate can free up areas for increasingly flexible traffic arrangements, for example,” says development manager Jani Lindroos. “It also allows us to further develop our permit and gate processes in the future.”
All measurements and photography is carried out while the vehicle drives in through the gate. Additional stops are not necessary, and the driver is not inconvenienced in any way.
The condition of the trucks driving to the harbour is recorded from both sides, the back, and from above, which provides entirely new kinds of information. The vehicles are also photographed diagonally from below. The pictures make it possible to recognise damage caused to containers and trailers.
“The operators and logistics companies are informed of the condition in which the vehicles and their cargo enter the harbour area. This information is useful when examining any damage caused,” Lindroos says.
‘The development of our gate operations is a good example of being able to make the everyday life of our clients more flexible in a tangible way.’
