Jonne Javas joined the Port of Helsinki as a summer trainee in 2022. During his first summer with the dock team, he supported daily operations through tasks, such as drafting, documentation, and minor technical assignments.

The following summer, Jonne continued at the Port with expanded responsibilities. He carried out dock inspections, performed loading calculations, checked vehicle ramps, and independently managed contracts. Alongside his studies, he continued working part-time and completed his final thesis for the port titled “Protection Against Corrosion in Pier Steel Structures”.

A new phase in the Development Programme*

After completing his studies in Structural Engineering, Jonne began working as a Project Engineer in early 2025. His role includes monitoring and assisting with support functions, supporting project leaders, and collaborating between departments.

The work is diverse and independent, and my current role is what I have always aspired to do.

This autumn, Jonne also started studying Geoengineering at Aalto University. His goal is to graduate within the next few years with a Master of Science in Engineering.

Learning and a sense of community

Through his work, Jonne has developed skills in CAD software and vessel modeling. In addition, he has served as the drone pilot for the central harbour. He describes the Port as a communal and approachable workplace.

“I am surrounded by friendly people, and it is easy to chat with everyone here.”

Looking ahead

Jonne finds his work meaningful, as the Development Programme has a tangible impact on Helsinki’s cityscape and the daily lives of its residents.
