The Port of Helsinki’s environmental impacts are closely connected to the type of vessels and vehicles visiting the port and the efficiency of the operations and the transport connections.

The goal of the Carbon-Neutral Port programme is that the Port’s own emissions are compensated to zero. Through its own actions, the Port will also support its customers and partners in decreasing the emissions from vessels and heavy traffic. The emissions of work machinery used in the harbour areas will also be reduced significantly.

Better solutions through environmental impact management

Vessel and vehicle technology is evolving all the time. It can be expected that the technology of more and more advanced vessels will become increasingly environmentally friendly over the course of the development programme term, as the operating concept strives to continue to serve customers and business life as well as possible.

Environmental perspectives guide the implementation of the development programme’s investments as well as the use of the areas, and environmental impact calculations will be made for each investment project. 

An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be carried out both for the harbour tunnel construction and the quay expansion in the West Harbour. An EIA procedure is a way to manage the projects’ detrimental environmental impacts. By taking the environmental impacts into account during the planning stages, it is possible to influence future solutions.
